The code unlocks the encrypted vault independently of the original computer. Keep it private and somewhere separate from the PC Calmbu protects.

Calmbu does not receive or escrow the code

03 / WHERE THE BACKUP LIVES

Start with the location that fits your risk.

Calmbu recommends an available OneDrive folder because it can survive loss of the PC. You can also choose other suitable storage.

OneDrive

Recommended when available for a protected copy that can survive device loss.

External drive

Simple physical separation. Disconnect it when stronger ransomware resistance matters.

Another local location

Useful for convenience, but not enough on its own if the whole PC is lost.

Optional resilient replica

Advanced storage can add a second protected copy without changing everyday use.

04 / BEFORE YOU INSTALL

Everything you need. Nothing surprising.

Which computer do I need?

A 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with supported local native Windows agent state to protect.

Do I need administrator access?

No. Calmbu installs for your Windows account and runs scheduled or change-aware protection with least privilege.

Do I need to close Codex or Claude Code?

No for normal purpose-built backup and first-time protection. Calmbu is designed to capture supported native Windows agent state consistently.

What happens if I close Calmbu?

Closing the window does not stop scheduled or change-aware protection. Interrupted verification resumes or restarts safely.
